This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by Gabriel E. Long (1751-1827) and attempt to connect them to their families.

Slaves

Gabriel Long was a slave owner. Many of the people he enslaved went unnamed. The 1810 census records in Culpeper Virginia indicated he held 40 enslaved people.[1] The 1820 census records for Culpeper show that he held 48 enslaved people.[2]

In his December 7, 1824 will, and subequent 1826 codicils, Gabriel E Long made specific reference to more than twenty five enslaved people.

  • To the children of son Reuben Long "...the following slaves Tom and his wife Anna, Robin, Dangerfield [?], & ____ of Anna's children except Jack now in my possession and a negro man named Tom now in my son Reuben Long's possession together with the future increase of the females..."
  • To the children of his deceased son Gabriel Long (Kentucky) "all the slaves [of son Gabriel Long's property in Kentucky] of this property in the possession of my son Gabriel Long at the time of his death and two slaves, viz Kady & one of her children which I have lately sent out for their ___ guardian, to them & their heirs forever..."
  • To the children of his son Nimrod Long deceased "the slaves and other property in his possession at the time of his death also Lucy and two of her children lately sent out by their guardian ... to them and their heirs forever..."
  • To his daugher Frances Slaughter Ball "the following slaves Cloe, Janney and her two children, Violet and her child Becky, Daniel, and a Negro man (in lieu of James, one of Cloe's children) named Ben now in possession of John Slaughter ..." and later he also gave to Frances Slaughter Ball "the following slaves Delly [Belly?] and her child Sally, Smallwood and his wife Sarah & their children viz Dennis, Sam, Lewis, Frederick, Daniel, and the remainder of said Sarah's increase since in possession of my said daughter also a Negro man named Ned ... "
  • To his son William B Long "the following slaves Charles, Harry, Jack, George, Celia and her children, Lisenny and her three children viz Gerrard, Jonathan and Andrew also Joe and Armistead [Annsted?] and the future increase of the females to him and his heirs forever..."[3]
